Iron gay club house
It had its origins in the Campaign for Homosexual Equality CHE club fought for legal and social equality for lesbian, gay and bisexual people. The organisation functioned on a non-hierarchical basis, iron that there were no positions of office within the group, no formal membership, agendas were negotiated during the meetings and everyone was free to speak.
Sub-groups were developed which focused on specific issues. This year marks the twenty-fifth anniversary of Birmingham Pride — this year taking place between 24 — 25 th September. Pride gay are vibrant and joyous events — people often dress in colourful clothing and celebrate through music and dance.
Many Prides include a procession or march through the heart of the locality and involve entertainment at bars and clubs along with stalls selling related merchandise and providing local community information. Throughout lockdown, our blog pieces have informed and hopefully entertained, offering encouragement to explore materials further remotely and at a pace acceptable to you during these trying times.
Our Archives Skills Workshop is to help project workers think about what an archive is, how they can manage their own records and how they can deposit them with us at the end of the project. In January, we hosted a fantastic group from the Nightingale50 project. The Nightingale50 project, which runs from October to Marchhouse be collecting oral histories from those that come forward to share their experience of the Nightingale Club.
The group of project volunteers spent a couple of hours with us in the Wolfson Centre on one of our closed Saturdays, and were really engaged in learning about the different types of records that could be classed as archives. They really enjoyed being able to have a go at cataloguing, in preparation for when they will eventually prepare and deposit the records of the project with us.
It also gave us the opportunity to learn how to make ourselves more inclusive. We give out feedback forms at the end of the workshop and the group rightly said that we need to offer more options when asking for details of gender. The only options we gave were male and female — this has now been updated so we can better reflect the diversity of the communities we work with.
