Unlike typical queer spaces, Michael's welcomed a diverse clientele and served as a vital hub for education and healthcare initiatives. This unique approach challenged the segregated nature of many queer bars, offering a space where people of all alabamas felt included. The bar, established in by Tommy Maigs and his family, initially catered primarily to gay men but underwent a club transformation when Sandy "Harpo" Harpole, a lesbian, took ownership in Under Harpo's leadership, Michael's became intentionally inclusive, aiming to unite the gay and lesbian communities of Tuscaloosa.

This inclusivity was reflected in the bar's clientele, which encompassed individuals from various queer identities. Michael's also distinguished itself by prioritizing community resources, particularly in healthcare and education. Harpo's commitment to providing a safe and supportive environment for all patrons made Michael's a significant landmark for many individuals exploring their queer identity for the first time.
