Winding through the group are couples, singles and straight friends and supporters, most in their 30ss but aged on either side as well. One couple came from Ogunquit, Maine, where there is already a long established gay community with many gay bars. More 'city,' not a big city but there's more to do.

We went out to dinner and came here and we've already met some great people. While there are many Web sites for gays and lesbians to meet, Flowers says they don't help with building community.

It took a few years for us to meet people but it's totally different now. There's a social life now. Others noted that the gatherings encourage talking and aren't just about standing around posing and that they eagerly look forward to the next month. The three organizers — Flowers, Monte and Carragher — work the room and introduce themselves to newcomers.
